“A Very Inconvenient Truth.”
In his so-called documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, former Vice-president Al Gore paints a dire picture of the future of the
Earth and takes mankind to task for ignoring the alarm of global destruction from mankind’s unwillingness to take care of our
planet. Many argue that Gore is an alarmist who takes the signs he is reading out of context and in his effort to blame mankind for
global warming ignores the evidence that the Earth may be going through a cycle that may have been repeated over and over
throughout the course of its history. Gore faults us for sticking our heads in the sand for our own convenience, running the risk that
we will leave devastation for future generations, if there are any.
I contend that whether or not Al Gore is right, the greatest threat to the well-being of mankind is not his position on man-made
global warming, but his ability to totally ignore the Almighty and His promise of Life to those who will serve Him and eternal
destruction to those who reject His offer of free salvation. Over and over, the evidences of human history show God to be
longsuffering and kind, only to be spurned, rejected and cursed by His own creation. The Bible tells of a time when Israel had
ignored their God and were about to bring destruction and captivity upon themselves.
Jer. 2:5-7: “Thus says the LORD: ‘What injustice have your fathers found in Me, that they have gone far from Me, have
followed idols, and have become idolaters? I brought you into a bountiful country, to eat its fruit and its goodness. But
when you entered, you defiled My land and made My heritage an abomination.’”
”In these verses, God tells the Jews that they had been given much in the way of abounding goodness. He sys they had eaten of
the goodness of the bountiful country in which they had been placed by God. They are told that in their blessing, they had defiled
the land by going after other gods, and making God’s heritage an abomination. God asks them point-blank, “What injustice have
your fathers found in Me…?” that they would do these things.
Now, looking at the history of America, seeing God’s rich blessings upon this country from its formation, even till today,
couldn’t He ask America the same question? The fact that most of America hides its face from God, pretending that their unbelief
causes Him to cease to exist, is a very inconvenient truth. America needs to do more than replace their incandescent bulbs with
fluorescent ones, America needs a heart transplant.
When Israel had rebelled at an earlier time, Joshua called them to account.
Josh 24:1-27:
1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel,
and they presented themselves before God.
2 Joshua said to all the people, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Long ago your forefathers, including Ter
ah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods.
3 ‘But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the River and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many
descendants. I gave him Isaac,
4 ‘and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his sons went down to
Egypt.
5 ‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out.
6 ‘When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and
horsemen as far as the Red Sea.
7 ‘But they cried to the LORD for help, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them
and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the desert for a long time.
8 ‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into
your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land.
9 ‘When Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor to put a
curse on you.
10 ‘But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.
11 ‘Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites,
Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands.
12 ‘I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you-- also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with
your own sword and bow.
13 ‘So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards
and olive groves that you did not plant.'
14 ‘Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the
River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
15 ‘But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether
the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me
and my household, we will serve the LORD.’”
16 Then the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
17 It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and
performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which
we traveled.
18 And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the
LORD, because he is our God."
19 Joshua said to the people, "You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not
forgive your rebellion and your sins.
20 If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he
has been good to you."
21 But the people said to Joshua, "No! We will serve the LORD."
22 Then Joshua said, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD." "Yes, we are
witnesses," they replied.
23 "Now then," said Joshua, "throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the LORD, the God
of Israel."
24 And the people said to Joshua, "We will serve the LORD our God and obey him."
25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he drew up for them decrees and laws.
26 And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under
the oak near the holy place of the LORD.
27 "See!" he said to all the people. "This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has said to
us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God." (NIV)
I TELL YOU-IT’S TIME WE STARTED SETTING UP SOME STONES!!!
We need to start calling out to the people of this country, reminding them of God’s hand upon this great nation. In our founding,
the revolutionary war was won against impossible odds and this nation, which has risen to super- power status, was born. In WW1
and WW2, God had His hand upon us. Whenever the military of the U.S. goes to fight our battles, our troops prove to be the finest
the world has ever seen. In every conflict where our army is allowed to engage the enemy we prove the strongest. But, America has
taken her God for granted, or worse yet, rejected Him. Forgetting that our greatness comes from Him, we begin to credit our
strength to ourselves. Walking away from God to pursue the gods of selfish pleasure and financial gain, we have conveniently
forgotten to bring glory and honor to the one who makes it all possible.
Too many refuse to hear the Word of God at all. And God continues to take notes. What a very inconvenient truth.
My friends, one of the greatest proofs of the existence of God is the Jewish people and the Jewish nation. If it were not for God’s
hand upon that people and nation, they would cease to exist. Many have sought their annihilation over the centuries, and this day
and age is no different. Only God holds Israel in the palm of His hand.
The Church needs to remind our nation that it was God who brought this country into being and His hand that upholds it. If we
will turn from our wicked ways and return unto Him, great revival will sweep our nation, but if w refuse to yield to Him, America
will go the way of all who set their face against the Holy God of Heaven, into eternal destruction and damnation. Hard words. Very
Inconvenient, yet nonetheless, true.
When I look at the spiritual decline of America, it is hard for me to get to worked up about global-warming. My heart goes out to
those who work so hard everyday to provide a good life for themselves and their family, and yet ignore the most pressing issue of
life, eternal destiny. I am thankful that our pledge of Allegiance recognizes the sovereignty of god over us. Now if only the people
of this great nation would do the same. I applaud the wisdom of our leaders who added the phrase “under God’ to the pledge in the
1950’s.
